The Snackpass Printing System

Updated over a week ago

Snackpass utilizes Epson printers for the printing of both receipts and labels. Our operational infrastructure encompasses two distinct technologies for connectivity: Bluetooth/ USB or Server Direct Printing (SDP). The first setup facilitates the connection of a single printer via either bluetooth or USB, or alternatively, the implementation of SDP technology permits the concurrent connection of multiple printers through WiFi or Ethernet interfaces.

Hardware

  • Receipt Printer (TM-M30II-H): Our standard receipt printer that prints out kitchen receipts or customer receipts via SDP. It also connects to the cash drawer to perform open cash drawer functions controlled on the orderhub.

  • Label printer (L100): Our standard label printer that prints out a sticky label to be affixed to drink cups / containers. Some stores may have an L90, which has mostly been replaced with the updated L100. If you would like to upgrade to an L100, please contact our support team.

  • Wifi Dongle: a USB dongle to be plugged into Epson printers that allows for printers to be on Wi-Fi network connection.

    • For L100 printers, it should be in the farthest LEFT slot and for TM-M30II-H printers it should be in the farthest RIGHT slot.

What Is Bluetooth And USB Connectivity?

Epson printers can be connected to our orderhub tablet via bluetooth or USB to print out orders. It is important to notice that this ONLY applies to our receipt printer model, the Epson TM-M30II.

Only one printer can be connected at a time via bluetooth or USB connectivity.

How Do I Connect My Receipt Printer Via Bluetooth?

In order to connect your printer via bluetooth, you're going to use your orderhub tablet:

  • Open up the Snackpass POS app.

  • On the bottom bar, go to the fourth option that reads SETTINGS.

  • Once in settings, scroll down to PRINTER settings and click on it.

  • Choose the Epson Receipt as your printer type.

  • Your tablet will begin looking for bluetooth receipt printers. Once you see it on the screen, select the printer and hit confirm. As a note, you can click the test receipt button first, just to ensure you're connecting to the right one.

  • Once you confirm, you will see that the printer settings will have a tag that reads CONNECTED.

  • Go to your orders tab to test it out. Scroll down to the bottom of an order and click on the black printer icon.

  • Your printer should be working.

How Do I Connect My Receipt Printer Via USB?

To connect your receipt printer USB, you're going to have to use a USB cable that connects directly from the printer to the orderhub tablet:

  • Connect one end of the USB cable on the printer's USB slot that reads iPad 2.1A. Connect the other end of the USB cable on the orderhub tablet.

  • On the bottom bar, go to the fourth option that reads SETTINGS.

  • Once in settings, scroll down to PRINTER settings and click on it.

  • The orderhub tablet will ask you if you allow the app to access the printer. Click on OK.

  • Find the printer and select the option that has USB in parenthesis, and hit confirm.

  • Your printer will now be connected via USB.

  • Go to your orders tab to test it out. Scroll down to the bottom of an order and click on the black printer icon.

How Do I Change The Number Of Receipts The Printer Prints?

This is the only setting that you can change for your printer when connected either on bluetooth or USB. Once the printer is connected, in order to change the number of receipts, do the following:

  • On the bottom bar, go to settings.

  • Scroll down to printer settings and click on that button.

  • It will then show you the printer that is connected and three button options.

  • Select the option that reads ''number of receipts printed''

  • Use the keyboard to change the number of receipts you want.

  • Hit confirm.

  • The number of printed receipts has been adjusted.

Note: Printers that are connected via Bluetooth or USB are NOT registered on your dashboard and can only be controlled via your Snackpass POS app.

What Is Server Direct Print (SDP)?

SDP is the most updated way of setting up printers to allow them to communicate directly to the Snackpass server, which allows for stable and reliable printing along with a variety of more advanced printing functions.

  • Print jobs sent by the Snackpass Server.

  • Requires network connection either via Ethernet or Wifi Dongle.

  • Supports multi-printing (printing from multiple printers), prep station printing (printing select categories or items from select printers), and variable printing formats from the same printer.

Does My Printer Support SDP? How Do I Check?

Server Direct Print is a newer printing technology that we introduced late 2021. Therefore, if your store was set up before then, there's a chance that your printer has not been upgraded yet to be SDP-compatible. If you follow the guide below and find that your printer is non-SDP compatible, please reach out to our support team for the possibility of an upgrade.

Non-SDP compatible devices:

  • TM-M30II: This receipt printers looks just like our currently supported TM-m30II-H model, but it does NOT have SDP capabilities. It was traditionally connected to the Orderhub via USB or Bluetooth connection.

How do I check if my device is SDP-compatible or not?

  1. Open the plastic rear covers (rear & bottom side) by gently plucking them off the printer.

  2. Check Model Name next to “Epson” logo on the backside of the printer. If your printer says “TM-M30II” you DO NOT have an SDP Compatible printer.

  3. If you're still unsure, check the port modules (bottom side of printer). Only TM-M30II-H have USB slots.

Printer Configurations And Settings On The Dashboard

Registering Printers

Printers live in the Dashboard > Devices > Printers. Here you can see a list of printers already registered to the store. If the printer is already SDP enabled and properly provisioned out of the warehouse, you should be able to just click + Add Device, select the device type to add, and enter the serial number of the printer.

  • Note: this page will NOT display non-SDP printers connected in the store, such as Bluetooth or USB connected printers.

Editing Printer Properties

In order to edit a printer, simply click on the device name under your registered printers and click on the upper right button that says edit. Once you click on the edit button, you will be able to configure several settings for your printers.

  • Device Name. You will be able to name your printer. This is especially helpful when you have prep stations assigned to your printers.

  • Auto Print: You can enable or disable auto printing for your printers.

  • Print Copies: You can configure here the number of copies you want your printers to print out.

  • Print Format: You will be able to change here the format of either the receipt or the label.

  • Display Modifier Groups: This will allow your labels to have the modifier group name above the modifiers. It is important to mention that this is only compatible with label printers and exclusively in the full label format.

  • Connect To Cash Drawer: This allows you to create a cash drawer. It is important to note that cash drawers should only be connected to receipt printers, and not label printers.

  • Prep Stations: This allows you to create prep stations for your printers, so they print out specific categories or items.

Printer Paper Formats:

Epson M30 Receipt Printers can choose between:

  • Chit - short and clean, for kitchen use.

  • Receipt - in between chit and customer. For mostly kitchen use.

  • Customer - has most detailed info, especially accounting info. For customer use.

Different Receipt Paper Formats

Epson L90 or L100 Label Printers can choose between

  • Full labels.

  • Condensed labels.

“Unpaid” part on the top means that these are open, unpaid orders. To learn more about the Pay Later feature, please red the Pay Later section in the feature walkthrough on our register article.

Prep Stations

Prep station allows specific printers to print out specific categories or items. It is important to notice that Snackpass currently does not support printing based on fulfillment method; for example, having take-out orders print from one and delivery orders print from another. Prep station is only based on menu items.

Common Prep Station Set-Ups:

  • Kitchen M30 Receipt - prints out food and snacks

  • Kitchen L100 Label - prints out drinks

  • Front Counter M30 - prints out both food and drinks for customer receipt

To set up a prep station, follow the steps shown after pressing “Create Prep Station” on the page. A few things to note:

  1. Prep station name is shown on the order when stores want to reprint items. When stores hit the orange printer icon, these prep station names will be displayed so users can select which printer they would like to reprint from. In the example below, we can see that the printer with the sandwiches prep station is shown amongst this list.

  2. Prep stations can either be inclusive or exclusive of items. Be smart about this to save time! For example, if your store is heavily beverage and only has 1 food category item, and the store would want to set up a drink only station. In this case, avoid selecting “inclusive” and spend time highlighting all of the drink categories. Just select the exclusive option and select the food one instead.

  3. This carries over to the reprint function on the orderhub. If you are trying to reprint a food item from a drink only prep station printer, nothing will print.

  4. No restarting of printers is necessary for any changes in prep station to reflect.
