What are card readers?

Our Stripe card readers are smart devices that facilitate cashless transactions . They accept credit cards, debit cards, and contactless payments, supporting EMV chip, contactless, and swipe methods. Powered by batteries, they easily connect to Snackpass kiosks and registers via Bluetooth or USB, ensuring secure payment processing anytime, anywhere.

Snackpass currently offers two Stripe card reader models.

Supported Features

  • Magstripe Payments
Originally, card payments were conducted by swiping the magnetic stripe—also called a magstripe—on the back of credit and debit cards. Because magstripe transactions involve transmitting the card number itself to the card reader, this type of payment is considered less secure than newer card payment methods.

  • EMV Chip Cards
Since the early 2010s, more credit and debit cards have come equipped with embedded computer chips. These cards are either inserted into card readers or tapped to initiate a transaction, at which point the EMV chip sends an encrypted code, and not the card number itself, to the card reader, minimizing the chances of someone accessing the card’s credentials for fraudulent purposes.

  • NFC Contactless Payments
Millions of cards are now enabled with near-field communication (NFC) technology, which allows payments to be completed by holding the card very close to the card reader, usually a few millimeters away.

  • Software Updates
The software on the Stripe Readers are constantly getting upgrades to make the product better. These updates are sent automatically to the card readers.

  • Supported Card Brands
Depending on the Stripe card reader model, some card brands are supported and some are not. Both of the models that Snackpass offers support the following card brands: Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover.
