SnackOS 2.0 | What's Changing

SnackOS 2.0 is the new operating system for Snackpass devices. As part of the transition to SnackOS 2.0, all restaurants will move from SnackOS 1.0 to SnackOS 2.0.

Most of the features and workflows you use today will remain available, although some may look or work differently. SnackOS 2.0 also introduces new features and additional customization options.

This guide highlights the most important changes you'll notice when moving from SnackOS 1.0 to SnackOS 2.0, so you know what to expect during the transition.

Note: You don't need to take any action to upgrade to SnackOS 2.0. Your Snackpass devices will be transitioned as part of the SnackOS 2.0 rollout. This guide is here to help you understand what's changing and where to find the features you already use.

Printing

What Changed?

In SnackOS 1.0, printers could be connected through Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or Ethernet. Wi-Fi and Ethernet printers were typically registered and managed through the restaurant dashboard.

In SnackOS 2.0:

  • Bluetooth printers are no longer supported.

  • Wi-Fi and Ethernet printers are still supported.

  • Printers are configured and managed directly from SnackOS Settings.

  • Printer configuration is handled through LAN Printing instead of the restaurant dashboard.

What Do I Need To Know?

If you previously used a Bluetooth printer, it will need to be replaced with a supported Wi-Fi or Ethernet printer.

If you already use a Wi-Fi or Ethernet printer, the printer itself can continue to be used, but its configuration and management have moved to SnackOS.

What Do I Need To Do?

If you're setting up or troubleshooting a printer on SnackOS 2.0, use the LAN Printing settings in SnackOS.

Print Formats

What Changed?

SnackOS 2.0 provides more customization options for receipt and label print formats.

Print formats are now configured through SnackOS Settings, rather than relying on the same configuration available in SnackOS 1.0.

What Do I Need To Know?

Your existing printing workflow may look different in SnackOS 2.0 because the available print format settings and customization options have changed.

What Do I Need To Do?

If you need to customize how receipts or labels print, use the print format settings in SnackOS 2.0.

Stations

What Changed?

In SnackOS 1.0, prep stations were optional and managed through the restaurant dashboard.

In SnackOS 2.0, stations are required for printers and the Kitchen Display System (KDS) to work properly.

Stations are now created and managed directly from SnackOS Settings.

What Do I Need To Know?

Every restaurant needs to have the appropriate stations configured in SnackOS 2.0.

This includes restaurants that use a single Expo station where everything is prepared. Even if all items go to the same place, an Expo station still needs to be created. Station configuration can also be managed at the device level, giving you more control over how individual devices handle kitchen workflows.

What Do I Need To Do?

Before using printers or KDS on SnackOS 2.0, make sure the appropriate stations have been created and configured for your restaurant's workflow.

Register And Guest Apps

What Changed?

SnackOS 2.0 reorganizes some of the apps and workflows that were previously separate in SnackOS 1.0.

The Register 2.0 app brings together several workflows that were previously handled through separate apps, including Register, Orders, and Dine-In Register functionality.

The Guest app combines guest-facing workflows that were previously handled through separate Kiosk and Tableside experiences.

What Do I Need To Know?

You may notice that some functions are now located in a different app than they were in SnackOS 1.0.

For example:

  • Register 2.0 is used for register and order-related workflows.

  • Guest is used for supported guest-facing ordering workflows.

  • Some features that previously had their own app or workflow may now be located within one of these apps.

What Do I Need To Do?

If you're looking for a feature that you used in SnackOS 1.0, check the corresponding SnackOS 2.0 app before assuming the feature is unavailable.

Settings

What Changed?

SnackOS 2.0 moves more device and restaurant configuration directly into the SnackOS Settings menu.

Some settings that were previously managed through the restaurant dashboard are now managed directly on the device.

What Do I Need To Know?

Depending on your SnackOS version and device, you may see Legacy and Beta settings areas.

Settings related to features such as printers, stations, card readers, and other device configuration may now be managed directly from SnackOS.

What Do I Need To Do?

When following a Snackpass Help Center article for SnackOS 2.0, use the settings path provided in that article rather than the SnackOS 1.0 dashboard path.

Offline Payments

What Changed?

Offline payments are available in SnackOS 2.0. This allows supported card payments to be processed when the restaurant temporarily loses its internet connection. Offline payments were not available in SnackOS 1.0.

What Do I Need To Know?

Offline payments are controlled by the Allow Offline Payments setting.

This setting is available under:

Settings > Back Of House > Order Flow > Allow Offline Payments

The restaurant must accept the Terms of Service and confirm the setting before offline payments can be used.

Support cannot enable offline payments on behalf of a restaurant.

Cash payments can still be accepted while offline, regardless of whether the offline card payment setting is enabled.

What Do I Need To Do?

If you want to use offline card payments, review the Allow Offline Payments setting in SnackOS 2.0.

During an outage, reconnect the device to the internet as soon as possible. Offline payment data must reconnect and sync with Snackpass.

Offline Order And Payment Status

What Changed?

SnackOS 2.0 can continue processing supported orders and payments during an internet outage.

Offline card transactions may initially appear as PENDING and later update to PAID or FAILED after the device reconnects.

What Do I Need To Know?

Only successfully paid orders are ultimately recorded in the restaurant's order database.

During an outage, some orders or information that normally appears online may not be available until the device reconnects.

For example, the Orders tab on Register 2.0 can continue to display offline Register 2.0 orders, while app and online orders may not appear until connectivity is restored.

What Do I Need To Do?

Reconnect the device to the internet as soon as possible after an outage.

For longer outages, consider pausing online ordering from the restaurant's Store > Orders settings to prevent new online orders from coming in while the restaurant is unable to receive them.

Kitchen Display System (KDS)

What Changed?

The Kitchen Display System (KDS) remains available in SnackOS 2.0, but some KDS workflows have changed and additional functionality is available.

One major addition is the ability to bulk complete orders.

What Do I Need To Know?

KDS relies on correctly configured stations in SnackOS 2.0.

If a KDS is not displaying orders correctly, verify that the appropriate stations and routing are configured before troubleshooting the KDS itself.

What Do I Need To Do?

Make sure the appropriate stations are created and configured for your kitchen workflow.

Register 2.0 Features

SnackOS 2.0 introduces several capabilities that were not available in SnackOS 1.0.

What Changed?

Depending on your restaurant's configuration, Register 2.0 may provide access to features such as:

  • Split payments

  • BOGO promotions

  • Offline card payments

  • Tax-exempt orders

  • Gift card balance search

  • Additional order and payment workflows

What Do I Need To Know?

These features are part of the SnackOS 2.0 experience and may change how certain transactions are handled compared with SnackOS 1.0.

What Do I Need To Do?

No action is required simply because these features are available. Use them when they apply to your restaurant's workflow.

For instructions on a specific feature, refer to its dedicated Help Center article.

Gift Cards

What Changed?

SnackOS 2.0 provides improved gift card balance searchability.

What Do I Need To Know?

Gift card information and balance-related workflows may look different from SnackOS 1.0.

Physical gift cards are supported through Duo-only physical gift card workflows.

What Do I Need To Do?

Use the gift card options available in your SnackOS 2.0 workflow to search for and manage gift card information.

Appearance

What Changed?

SnackOS 2.0 supports dark mode and light mode.

What Do I Need To Know?

The appearance of SnackOS may look different from SnackOS 1.0 depending on the selected display mode.

What Do I Need To Do?

No action is required. You can select the available appearance preference from SnackOS Settings.

What's Staying The Same?

Not everything changes when moving to SnackOS 2.0.

Most of the core workflows you use today remain available, although their location, appearance, or configuration may be different.

For example, you can still:

  • Process customer orders.

  • Manage orders from the register.

  • Use printers and KDS.

  • Accept cash and card payments.

  • Manage restaurant settings.

  • Use guest-facing ordering experiences.

  • Manage employees and restaurant operations.

If you cannot find a feature you previously used in SnackOS 1.0, check the relevant SnackOS 2.0 app or Settings menu before assuming that the feature has been removed.
